Winterizing

Winterize your yacht systems with Marine Works

The sailing and motoring season is slowly coming to an end, do not forget about the maintenance of your ship for the winter, and it will definitely pay off with reliability next season. When the temperatures are low, and your yacht has been standing still for several months, all communications, mechanical, starting from the engine through sanitary and additional devices (generators, water-makers, air conditioning) are affected by various changes.

The Marine Works team will prepare your yacht for the winter so you can plan your next cruises with peace of mind, and when it’s time to launch, you don’t have to worry about any of the rigs letting you down at the least expected moment.

Depending on the engine that you have on your unit and the variety of other installations that require maintenance before winter, we will prepare an individual proposal adapted to your yacht.

* All of the following procedures are highly recommended by the most popular manufacturers of engines, equipment and yacht installations. Before starting work, we will decide what exactly your engine, generator, air conditioner or watermaker need to keep everything working equally efficiently after winter.

The most important work to do before winter

 1. FUEL STORAGE AND FUEL LINE MAINTENANCE.

Methods for purifying the fuel supplied to the engine and how to store it on a yacht are currently under discussion. There are several “schools” that talk about how we should preserve the fuel supply and storage system.

We approach each installation individually. We will clean and maintain the fuel line for you, as well as prepare the fuel in the tanks and the tanks themselves for long periods of downtime.

2.COOLING SYSTEM MAINTENANCE (CLOSED FRESH WATER SYSTEM, OPEN SEA WATER SYSTEM)

We offer maintenance of the cooling system, which includes draining the remaining seawater in the system and after cleaning the filter, filling it with antifreeze. We will check the condition of the coolant in a closed cooling system. In case of poor quality coolant and objections to its antifreeze, we recommend changing the fluid.

 3. CHANGE OIL AND FILTER.

A very important point is the absence of waste oil in the engine, which, in addition to the tasks of lubricating the system, performs several other functions that are very important for the engine. One of these is to protect against corrosion of internal engine components.

As a result of the penetration of by-products of fuel combustion into the oil, acids that are dangerous in terms of corrosion are formed in the oil; changing the oil before wintering protects against this danger.

4. CHECKING THE QUALITY AND CONDITION OF BATTERIES.

Leaving the batteries in the unit for several months exposes them to cold temperatures. When we discharge the battery in such a situation, we can be sure that when it comes time to go, the batteries will not be usable. This is why it is so important that the batteries remain fully charged.

 5.CHECK TRANSMISSION OIL CONDITION

Checking the transmission oil quality for S and Z-drive transmissions is the most reliable method for detecting salt water leaks into the lubrication system, which indicates the need to replace the sealants on the propeller shafts. In the event that oil and salt water emulsion remains in the transmission, we will corrode and degrade the internal components of the transmission.

Additional systems on the yacht

In addition, benefit from Marine Works’ expertise in pre-winter maintenance of additional equipment in yacht installations such as:

desalination plants,

generators,

air conditioning,

heating,

sanitary installations. *

* Sanitary installations – maintenance only after examination of the condition of the installation by Marine Works.
